What’s Happening in Fourth Grade
Week of August 26, 2019
Please send a set of earbuds for your child to use this year with their computers.  They will use
them during class when all of the students are working at once. They will keep their earbuds in
the zipper compartment on the outside of their binders.

Reading (Mrs. Isaminger):
This week, the students will finish reading activities related to “Because of Winn-Dixie” in the
Journeys text. The Journeys text can be accessed online through Think Central.  Your child’s
Think Central login information can be found in the front of his or her planner. There will be a
reading test over “Because of Winn-Dixie” on Friday, August 30th. There will not be a Wordly
Wise test this week, however, the students will have their first Wordly Wise test on Friday,
September 6th.

Language Arts (Mrs. Isaminger):
We will begin Chapter 2 of Shurley English this week. Chapter 2 teaches nouns, verbs, adverbs,
adjectives, article adjectives, and how to classify sentences. There will not be a Shurley English
test this week.

Writing (Mrs. Isaminger):
This week, the students will finish working on their auto-biographical poems.

Bible (Miss Reech)
MV: Isaiah 40:8 – “The grass dries up. The flowers fall to the ground. But what our God
says will stand forever.” Our focus this week in Bible will be learning that the Bible
endures forever. Our Bible test will be on Thursday, August 29.

Spelling (Miss Reech)
Students received their word list on Friday. They should have instructions on how to
complete homework for Monday and Tuesday stapled to the front of their spelling
notebook. 7 words will be used each night. There will be a practice test on Wednesday.
If the students receive a 100 A+, they will not need to take the test on Thursday.

Social Studies (Miss Reech)
We are concluding our unit on map skills. We are focusing on different types of maps,
cardinal directions, intermediate directions, map scale and map keys. Students completed
their study guide on Friday. Our Map Skills Test will be Thursday, August 29.

Science (Mrs. Jaques)
Next week, we will begin a unit on climate.  Each student will also become a “Junior
Climatologist” for a city of their choice in the world. They will be responsible for
collecting and reporting weather data and sunlight patterns for their city. We will use
this journal throughout the year in both math and science.

We will complete Chapter 2 on comparing, ordering numbers and rounding numbers
through the millions place.  We will have the Chapter 2 test on Tuesday, August 27.
