Week of August 19, 2019

What’s Happening in Fourth Grade
Week of August 19, 2019

Our homeroom's chapel presentation will be on Wednesday, August 28th, at 8:15 a.m. in the Brown-Holt Chapel. Chapel skits were sent home today. Please work with your child to memorize his or her lines.

Please send a set of earbuds for your child to use this year with their computers.  They will use
them during class when all of the students are working at once. They will keep their earbuds in
the zipper compartment on the outside of their binders.

Reading (Mrs. Isaminger):
Next week, we will be reviewing reading skills and completing response activities (2-5-8 menu) with
our summer reading novels, Stone Fox and Trouble River. The students’ response activities will be
due on Friday, August 23rd. Most of these will be completed in class, however, the students may
have some homework if additional time is needed. We will also be reading “Because of Winn-Dixie”
in the Journeys text. The Journeys text can be accessed online through Think Central.  Your
child’s Think Central login information can be found in the front of his or her planner. There will
not be a reading or Wordly Wise test next week.

Language Arts (Mrs. Isaminger):
We will finish Chapter 1 in Shurley English with a review of capitalization and punctuation rules.
There will be a Shurley English test on Friday, August 23rd.

Writing (Mrs. Isaminger):
The boys and girls will continue working on their first writing assignment. The students must
explain why their constructed lego boats would be able to withstand the treacherous waters. The
students will also continue working on their first poem. It will be a auto-biographical poem about
themselves.

Bible (Miss Reech)
MV: 2 Timothy 3:16 – “God has breathed life into all Scripture. It is useful for teaching
what is true. It is useful for correcting our mistakes. It is useful for making lives whole
again. It is useful for training us to do what is right.” Our focus this week in Bible will be
learning how the Bible can be useful in our lives. Our Bible test will be on Thursday,
August 22.

Spelling (Miss Reech)
Students received their word list on Friday. They should have instructions on how to
complete homework for Monday and Tuesday stapled to the front of their spelling
notebook. 7 words will be used each night. There will be a practice test on Wednesday.
If the students receive a 100 A+, they will not need to take the test on Thursday.

Social Studies (Miss Reech)
We are continuing our unit on map skills. We are focusing on different types of maps,
cardinal directions, intermediate directions, map scale and map keys. Students completed
nine definitions this past week. Our vocabulary test will be Wednesday, August 21.

Science (Mrs. Jaques)
Next week, we will continue to study different types of scientists and the process skills
that scientists use everyday.  The students will also write a story about how science is a
part of their daily life as they do their favorite activities.  The students will have a
unit test on Friday, August 23.  The information is in their Scientific Skills Packet
on pages 4-6.

Math (Mrs. Jaques)
Next week, we will begin Chapter 2 on comparing and ordering numbers through the
millions place. The students will also round numbers to a given place value.  There will
not be a math test next week. On Tuesday, August 20, the students will have a
timed basic-facts addition test on facts to twenty. They may practice at the following
