What’s Happening in Fourth Grade

Week of August 12, 2019

Our class’ Chapel presentation will be on Wednesday, August 28th. Parents are invited to
attend as your child will be performing in a short skit related to the Beatitudes. Chapel is
held in the Brown-Holt Chapel at 8:15 a.m. Further information will be sent home next
week via email.

Please send a set of earbuds for your child to use this year with their computers.  They will use them during class when all of the students are working at once. They will keep their earbuds in the zipper compartment on the outside of their binders.

Reading (Mrs. Isaminger):

Next week, we will be reviewing reading skills and completing response activities with our summer reading novels, Stone Fox and Trouble River. We will also begin reading “Because of Winn-Dixie” in their Journeys text. The Journeys text can be accessed online through Think Central. Login information will be sent home with your child next week. The students will also be introduced to Wordly Wise this week. Wordly Wise is a rich vocabulary curriculum. There will not be a reading or Wordly Wise test next week.

Language Arts (Mrs. Isaminger):
We will begin Chapter 1 in Shurley English with a review of capitalization and punctuation rules.  A student textbook will be assigned to your child on Monday. The students may bring that textbook home to help with homework.  There will not be a Shurley test next week.

Writing (Mrs. Isaminger):
The boys and girls will begin working on their first writing assignment.  They will use legos to build a boat that could survive Trouble River. The students must explain why their boats would be able to withstand the treacherous waters. The students will also begin working on their first poem. It will be a auto-biographical poem about themselves.

Bible (Miss Reech)
MV: John 8:32 “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”  Our focus this week in Bible will be learning God’s word is true. Our Bible test will be on Thursday.

Spelling (Miss Reech)
Students received their word list on Friday. They should have instructions on how to complete homework for Monday and Tuesday, stapled to the front of their spelling notebook. 7 words will be used each night. There will be a practice test on Wednesday.  If the students receive a 100 A+, they will not need to take the test on Thursday.

Social Studies (Miss Reech)
Next week, we are starting our unit on map skills. We are focusing on different types of maps, cardinal directions, intermediate directions, longitude, latitude, and map keys.

Science (Mrs. Jaques)
Next week, we will continue to study different types of scientists and the process skills that scientists use everyday.  The students will also write a story about how science is a part of their daily life as they do their favorite activities.

Math (Mrs. Jaques)
Next week, we will begin Chapter 1 in our Harcourt Math textbooks on place value and number sense.  The students will read, write and identify the place value of whole numbers through the hundred millions place.  They will also problem solve using pictographs. We will have the Chapter 1 Test on Friday, August 16.
