What’s Happening in Fourth Grade


Week of December 16, 2019


Reading (Mrs. Isaminger):
This week, the students will read “Invasion from Mars” by Howard Koch and “The History of
Radio” by Vivian Fernandez in the Journeys text. The Journeys text can be accessed online
through Think Central. The students will practice comparing and contrasting the two pieces of
writing. There will not be a reading or Wordly Wise test this week. 


Language Arts (Mrs. Isaminger):
This week, the students will continue Chapter 5 of Shurley English. Chapter 5 teaches helping
verbs, the “not” adverb, natural and inverted word order, coordinate conjunctions, and compound
sentences. There will not be a Shurley English test this week.


Writing (Mrs. Isaminger):
This week, the students will continue writing an essay about the three gifts they would give Jesus. 


Bible (Miss Reech)
MV: Isaiah 9:6 - “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be
on his shoulders.  And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting
Father, Prince of Peace..” This week’s Bible lesson is the Christmas story. We will discuss
how the birth of Jesus was foretold and the names of Jesus. The Bible test will be
Tuesday, December 17 on the memory verse only. 


Spelling (Miss Reech)
There will be no spelling words this week. Please work on cursive handwriting! 


Social Studies (Miss Reech)
We are concluding our chapter on Caribbean South America. We have focused on the
countries of Colombia, Venezuela, French Guiana, Guyana, and Suriname. Students
corrected their study guide on Thursday. The chapter test will be Tuesday, December 17. 
We have started an in class project on Caribbean South America that will be completed at
the end of the week. 


Science (Mrs. Jaques)
We will begin our new unit on energy and heat transfer. The students will identify
different types of waves,  how waves travel, and materials in which some waves may not
be able to travel through. The students received their vocabulary words for this unit last
Monday.  They will have a matching vocabulary test on Monday, December 16.  

Math (Mrs. Jaques)
Next week, we will work in math centers.  The students will complete centers on the
following math skills: logic squares, rotational symmetry, multi-step multiplication
problems, and finding differences in miles.  On Thursday, January 9, the students will
have a timed basic-facts division test. They may practice at the following website:
