What’s Happening in Fourth Grade

Week of December 2, 2019

Reading (Mrs. Isaminger):
This week, the students will read “The Power of W.O.W” by Crystal Hubbard in their Journeys
text. The Journeys text can be accessed online through Think Central. Your child’s Think Central
login information should be taped on the front page of his or her planner. The students will not
have a reading test this week. The students will also be introduced to the Wordly Wise Lesson 6
vocabulary this week. There will not be a Wordly Wise test this week either.

Reading projects are due this week. The boys’ projects are due on Thursday, December 5th, and
the girls’ projects are due on Friday, December 6th.

Language Arts (Mrs. Isaminger):
This week, the students will continue Chapter 5 of Shurley English. Chapter 5 teaches helping
verbs, the “not” adverb, natural and inverted word order, coordinate conjunctions, and compound
sentences. There will not be a Shurley English test this week.

Writing (Mrs. Isaminger):
This week, the students will practice the skill of developing a writing “hook” in an essay. The
students will also continue writing a chosen news article about an event happening at Dunham or
in the community.

Bible (Miss Reech)
MV: Psalm 32:5 - “Then I admitted my sin to you. I didn’t cover up the wrong I had done.
I said, “I will admit my lawless act to the Lord and you forgave the guilt of my sin.” This
week we are learning about sin’s consequences and the effect it has on others as well
as our heart. We will not have a Bible test this week.

Spelling (Miss Reech)
There will be no spelling words this week. Please work on cursive handwriting.

Social Studies (Miss Reech)
We are beginning our chapter on Caribbean South America. We will be focusing on the
countries of Colombia, Venezuela, French Guiana, Guyana, and Suriname. Students have
defined their vocabulary words, and these words can be located on my blog, under the
social studies tab.  We will begin learning about the geography of the area and move on
to the history.

Science (Mrs. Jaques)
We will begin our new unit on energy and heat transfer. The students will identify and
describe conductors and insulators.  They will also discover how heat energy travels
from hot objects to cold objects.

Math (Mrs. Jaques)
After the break, we will begin Chapter 12.  The students will multiply three and four-digit
numbers by two-digit numbers.  The students will also multiply money amounts. The
Chapter 12 test will be on Tuesday, December 10.  On Thursday, December 5, the
students will have a timed basic-facts division test. They may practice at the following
website:  http://www.harcourtschool.com/activity/thats_a_fact/english_K_3.html
