Week of March 9, 2020

What’s Happening in Fourth Grade


Week of March 9, 2020


Reading (Mrs. Isaminger):
This week, the students will finish a culminating in-class project over the Island of the Blue
Dolphins.  Wordly Wise Lesson 9 vocabulary words were introduced last week. Wordly Wise
homework will be due on Thursday, March 12th. There will not be a reading test or Wordly Wise
test this week.


Language Arts (Mrs. Isaminger):
This week, the students will continue chapter 7 of Shurley English. Chapter 7 teaches direct
objects, transitive verbs, verb tenses, regular and irregular verbs,  and tenses of helping verbs.
There will not be a Shurley English test this week, but there will be a Shurley English test over
Chapter 7 on Thursday, March 19th. 


Writing (Mrs. Isaminger):
This week, the students will finish their sea animal research and complete a rough draft of their
sea animal research paper. The students will begin working on their typed final copies as well. 


Bible (Miss Reech)
MV: 1 Corinthians 2:5 - “So that your faith might not rest on men’s wisdom, but on God’s
power.” This week students will be learning about the power of the Holy Spirit. Our Bible
test will be on Thursday, March 12. 


Spelling (Miss Reech)
10 words will be given Monday and Tuesday. Students received instructions on how
 to complete homework for Monday and Tuesday located in their 
Reech folder. 7 words will be used each night. On Wednesday we will take a
 practice test. If students make a 100 A+, they do not have to take the test on 
Thursday. Our test on all 21 words will be on Thursday.


Social Studies (Miss Reech)
Students have defined the vocabulary for chapter 4, the Middle Atlantic States.
We will begin learning about the geography and history of the region. The students were
already tested on the states of the Northeast region, so they will not have a map portion
for this chapter. However, they can continue to practice studying the location of the 50
states at sheppardsoftware.com in preparation for the 50 states test at the end of the
year.  


Science (Mrs. Jaques)
We will continue our unit on the scientific method and explore many sample projects.  We
will be learning about each step in the Scientific Method and how to apply each step to
their own project.  Midweek, we will begin our new unit on the makeup of the Earth.
They will discover differences in soils. They will also learn about different types of
rocks and how they are formed.


Science fair is quickly approaching.  Students have received their colored manilla folders
to use for the backdrops.  Important information can be found in their Science Fair packet
which should be in their “Jaques Folder”  Students 1-9 should bring their backboard and
written report to present on Wednesday, March 18. Students 10-17 should bring their
backboard and written report to present on Thursday, March 19. The Science Fair will be
on Friday, March 20.

Math (Mrs. Jaques)
We will continue our unit on fractions. The students will add and subtract fractions and
mixed numbers with like and unlike denominators. We will have the Chapter 22 test on
Thursday, March 12. On Wednesday, March 11, the students will have a timed basic-facts
multiplication/division mixed test.  They may practice at the following website:

Week of March 2, 2020


Reading (Mrs. Isaminger):
This week, the students will work on a culminating in-class project over the Island of the

This week, the students will begin organizing their research notes into a written rough draft. 


Bible (Miss Reech)
MV: 1 Corinthians 3:16 - “Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and
that God’s Spirit lives in you?” This week students will continue learning about the
Holy Spirit and how Jesus gives Him to believers as a Helper. Our project in
Innovation lab will focus on the fruits of the spirit. Our Bible test will be
Wednesday, March 4th.

The chapter test for chapter 3, The New England States, will be Tuesday, March 3rd.
The chapter test will include a map portion of the Northeast states. Students have a
corrected study guide along with a map of the specific states labeled. They can practice
the location of the states at sheppardsoftware.com.  Our next topic will be the
Mid-Atlantic States. We will define our vocabulary and begin learning about the
geography of the region.

We will continue our unit on the scientific method and explore many sample projects.
